The plumb line is the element of inner balance and suggests the idea of a stable, linear ascent, drawing an ideally infinite vertical line - as it leads to perfection. It alludes to the search for the transcendent, but also to the elevation essential for a construction that rises as far as possible towards the superior dimension.
The level, an instrument destined to designate perpendicularity, the horizontal with respect to the vertical, signifies the capacity to construct a system of reference, and therefore spiritual enrichment, while in other ways it symbolises the common destiny of Death, and admonishes men to prepare for the Great Leveller
